Team Leadership: NCC

Goals: Provide nephrology expertise, and a means for deploying them, for the management of dialysis and transplant patients during a large-scale crisis. Provide assistance to physicians that are displaced by disasters.

Renal Disasters is defined by the Physician Response Team as:
Acute or threatened events that are concentrated in time or space, and in which large numbers of chronic dialysis patients, or individuals with the recent onset of acute kidney injury, undergo severe or potential risk as a result of the lack of reasonable availability to dialysis care.

Accomplishments: Work has begun with Federal representatives of to establish a specific team of kidney specialists that would be mobilized to provide assistance in the areas receiving kidney patients from the disaster area under the National Disaster Medical System of DHS. Training sessions on physician responsibilities and expectations have been conducted during national training sessions. Tools have been developed to help physicians prepare and respond.

The Disaster-related Displaced Physicians List, is hosted by the Renal Physicians Association (RPA) and activated only in times of disasters. For more information, please visit the RPA website.
